Important information about the ice storm of January 1998

On December 18, 2012, Quebec Superior Court approved an agreement between option consommateurs and four insurance companies affiliated with Intact for an out-of-court settlement of the consumer organization’s class action lawsuit regarding the January 1998 ice storm.

Under the agreement, the four insurance companies agree to pay a total of $ 12.5 million to settle the class action.

Policyholders covered under the agreement received their first payment in March 2013, in the amount of $50.92 for each home insurance policy.

This first payment was mailed to the address shown on your home insurance policy that was in effect in 1998, or to a different address if you contacted us to give us your current one.

After the initial payments, there was still a residual balance in the settlement fund. As a result, a second payment, for an amount of $24.86, will be made between now and the end of summer 2014, as full and final payment in accordance with the agreement approved by Quebec Superior Court.

To determine the payment amount, the balance of the fund was divided by the number of policyholders who had cashed the initial payment cheque.
