On December 18, 2012, Quebec Superior Court approved an agreement between option consommateurs and four insurance companies affiliated with Intact for an out-of-court settlement of the consumer organization’s class action lawsuit regarding the January 1998 ice storm.
Under the agreement, the four insurance companies agree to pay a total of $ 12.5 million to settle the class action.
Policyholders covered under the agreement received their first payment in March 2013, in the amount of $50.92 for each home insurance policy.
A second payment is scheduled for the autumn of 2013. More details, including the amount of this payment, will be announced at a later date.
You are eligible for this indemnity if you meet both of the following conditions:
1. In January 1998, you had a home insurance policy with one of these four insurance companies:
2. You lived at that time in one of the municipalities mentioned in the class action.
The first indemnity payment was mailed to policyholders at the address on their home insurance policy that was in effect in 1998.
If you have moved since 1998 or plan to do so in the near future, you need to send us your new address. Please fill out this change of address form.
